Eating Eggs

Our chickens are very bad. One of them ate the eggs. Maybe because it was too hungry.
We read a book that said if your chickens ate the eggs then you should put mustard in it so the chickens wont eat eggs anymore. I guess they hate mustard.

The place we found the eaten egg was in the nest box so we're putting it in the nest box. If the chickens don't stop eating eggs then we might just kill them. I hope the plan works.

  1. On a practical note. If I don't collect my eggs at least 4 times a day I get pecked/eaten eggs. i don't have enough nest space to keep everyone happy all the time. More work for me either way. BUT, once a chicken identifies eggs as food, she is lost.
Eat her, or fight a long battle you will never win.

  2. We tried the mustard thing Sunday. They jumped all over the first one but didn't seem to like it. They spent a lot of time wiping off their beaks They ate about half of the second. Only two of the five even bothered pecking at the third one. They left the two eggs that they laid on Sunday alone. Today they laid 4 eggs and left them alone. We will see if it holds.

On a related topic, it gave us a good reason to learn how to say mustard in Chinese. We don't eat much mustard so no one but mom knew how to say it in Chinese before Sunday. We all know how now.

We'll update this weekend and post pictures.

  3. Hey, Try putting plastic easter eggs in the nesting boxes. When the chickens go to peck them, they realize they will not break, and then stop pecking the eggs. Hope this helps, it worked for me. FYI: Remember to tape the eggs so they will not accidently open.
